Welcome to the Weekly Module Review style rankings page. This is the
place to get a complete overview of all the modules reviewed thusfar,
separated into their various component styles and stacked up against one
another.
Click on the module name jump to the associated review, and from there you

== a form that is characterized by long playing time and the use of
mostly synthetic instruments; synths, acid samples, variably
complex rhythms, repetitive, and often with little in the way of
a main melody line; most often the tone is rather relaxed and
smooth
Atmospheric 6 8
== an attempt to convey some sort of specific...atmosphere; if it's
a seashore, then there'll usually be sounds of seagulls and
crashing waves -- if a haunted house, there'll be some creaking
doors and shrieks -- if underwater, probably sounds of bubbles
and burbling water; etc.
Ballad 13 4
== fairly mellow-tempo music imparting heavy emotions; flutes,
acoustic (usually) guitars and pianos are common here; sometimes
without any mentionable percussion

Chip 2 0
== normally purely synthetic music in the vein of old C64 tunes;
samples are, by definition, tiny; usually lots of arpeggio
Dance 17 8
== recognizable lively percussion driven music, usually heard in
most standard dance clubs; voice/speech samples are common

== this definition is geared a little bit more towards the
traditional, usually non-techno based music of Amiga demos
(though it definitely carries over into PeeCee demos too); good
examples are much of Purple Motion's and Lizardking's work.
Dreamy 1 3
== soft bell-tones, lots of synths and chimes, very airy sounds and
overall tenor; often emotional, but just as often mildly upbeat
Easy-Listening 4 0
== mellow, laidback, relaxing, natural sounds (acoustic guitar, soft
piano or synths, but mostly non-electronic sounds, perhaps with
some atmospheric sound effects like ocean waves or rain, etc.
Electronic 1 2
== mostly synthetic/electronic sounds, often leaning toward techno,
Kraftwerkian stylings
Experimental/Progressive 10 1
== this style grouping is represented by the types of music that
employ discordance/dissonance, offbeat and strange progressions
and other musically "out there" tactics; it's what most people
will regard as "weird" because it flaunts convention and goes
into uncharted, or often neglected territories (for better or
worse)
Fantasy 7 2
== freewheeling style music, the sort you might hear playing over a
stream of images of canyons and crashing seascapes, valleys, etc.
as seen by a plane in flight; usually a brisk pace overall
Funk 10 2
== rhythm based on lively percussion, usually with slap bass;
jazz-derived; ranges from early 70's "Afro-Funk" to more highly
energized funk-fusion
Goa 1 0
== a sort of fast trance, often characterized by added breakbeats
and acid sounds
Gothic 1 0
== a kind of underground rock style characterized usually by
brooding tones; verging on industrial; think Sisters of Mercy
and Ministry
Hardcore 2 0
== not to split hairs, but this heading is for the type of rave
and techno that is very energetic, loud and heavy, much moreso
than 'generic' techno/rave/etc., but, for the most part, free
of the gut-level, almost angry, venomous tone that modules
falling into the 'Heavy Hardcore' group exhibit.
Heavy Hardcore 1 0
== a somewhat generic heading which encompasses the very hardest
styles of techno, rave, gabber, hardcore, etc.
HipHop 3 1

Industrial 5 4
Jazz 11 7
== saxes, slap bass, Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong, to Kenny
G on the lighter side, to some basics mixed with discordance
a la 60's modern underground cafe
Jungle 8 1
Light Rock 8 9
== rock elements, but with a quieter disposition
Metal 8 0
== rock on steroids, usually driven by heavy guitars and loud,
powerful percussion; stretches from traditional Iron Maiden,
Metallica, etc. to harder stuff such as speed/death/doom/
black metal (Sepultura, Brainsmasher, etc.)
New Age 10 3
== usually a light-hearted style, with a carefree attitude; often
includes atmospheric sound effects, and aspects of dreamy,
fantasy and orchestral styles; usually fairly mellow-tempo
Orchestral 9 3
== classical, usually making use of a fairly standard orchestral
instrument ensemble including violins and other strings, timpani,
woodwinds, and appropriate brass; often a story-telling format
Other/Undefined 2 2
== anything that doesn't owe itself greatly to any well-defined
style; note that this category is simply a catchall and should
definitely note be equated with "bad"
Pop 6 4
== standard 80's disco club; ranges from upbeat, ballad to
middle-of-the-road intense; essentially spans a frighteningly
broad range these days; arguably Depeche Mode, New Order, etc.
could dwell under this heading
Punk 1 0
== a style difficult to describe, but which most would understand
by recalling the music of the Sex Pistols, Black Flag and Dead
Kennedys; today it includes more tame stuff by the likes of
Green Day, etc.
Rave 5 1
Rock 5 2
== guitars, moderate-heavy percussion, the usual; who needs an
explanation anyway?
Soft Rock 6 4
== a mellow rock, with the usual percussion, but a type that is
weaker and less busy; often acoustic guitars instead of electric;
synth backings and usually a definite emotion are present;
ballad-ish
Spacey 2 5
== as the name implies, the sort of music that puts you in mind of
space travel, inner or outer; usually heavy with synths and odd
sounds
Techno 21 17
== who doesn't know what techno is?
Thrash 0 1
== kind of a cross between hard rock, metal and punk; usually very
much toward the headbanging end; harder and more intense than
standard metal, but not necessarily more downbeat, a la death
metal
Trance 10 11
== a form usually based on acid style samples and unusual melodies;
similar to ambient, but more often the overall tone is more
disorganized and hits a spot much deeper in the gut; usually very
long playing times; many recommendations include watching a weird
light show alongside the sounds; meditative
TripHop 2 2
== a cross between funk/jazz and hiphop; usually lively rhythms and
often with voice samples
I've tried to give each style some substantial description. Those that are
missing such comments are ones I just couldn't supply a decent description
for at this time.
Some styles that are more ambiguous are given some description. More will
be added as time and imagination permit. As I don't proclaim to be
absolutely familiar with every style, feel free to send me more accurate
descriptions if you like.
Note on the two entries: each module is given from one to four styles that
represent the main identifiable influences. The one with the most
influence is considered the "main" entry, and so on. As listed below, main
entries are those above the "-" row seperator. Below these are the entries
with secondary influences for that type. Tertiary and quaternary
influences aren't usually enough to make a major difference in a person's
downloading decision, so they're ignored for purposes of this page.
